‘No logic in opposing Reliance Retail’

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Feb. 1 After facing a wave of opposition, Reliance Retail may finally be able to open its outlets in West Bengal.

Mr Nirupam Sen, West Bengal Minister for Commerce and Industries, who met the Reliance Group Chairman, Mr Mukesh Ambani, here on Thursday, said he saw no logic in opposing Reliance when other domestic players such as Big Bazaar and Spencer’s are already operating in the State.

Some coalition parties in the State Government have been opposing Reliance Fresh launching its outlets in Kolkata, arguing that it would force many small shopkeepers out of business. At a meeting with select media persons here on Friday, Mr Sen said he would take up the issue with the coalition partners to ensure that Reliance also gets equal opportunity.

Reliance had announced plans to invest around Rs 2,000 crore in agri-based retail business in the State.
