Human Resources States - Tamil Nadu ‘Employers too look for strong brands’
Mr M.V. Ravichandar, General Manager, HR, Sundaram Motors, at the BL Club lecture to the BBA and B.Com students of RKM Vivekananda College. Also present are Swami Atmaghanananda, Secretary of the college (centre), and Dr Kanaga Sabesan Nagarajan, Professor-in-charge of the college. Our Bureau Chennai, Feb. 3 Just as those aspirants in the job market seek out strong company brands to work for, employers too look to hire ‘brands’. An employer would like to hire someone they need to impart minimum training to and look at the institution the candidate has graduated from, which gives the employer a sense of the quality and standing of the potential employee. Giving a different dimension of the brand as a concept, Mr M.V. Ravichandar, General Manager, HR, Sundaram Motors, speaking to the BBA and B.Com students of the RKM Vivekananda College here under the aegis of the BL Club, said that a college is a brand and those brand values rub off on the students who pass out from its portals. Mr Ravichandar stressed that education does not stop when one passes out from college but is a lifelong process. In most corporate careers, he said, academic brilliance was not called for but what was needed was KAS – knowledge, attitude and skills. A right and positive attitude will emanate from one’s behaviour. Interviewers give at least 60 per cent of the weightage to the attitude of the candidate, 20 per cent to knowledge and the rest to skills. “Employers look for some keys in the mannerisms of the candidates being interviewed,” said Mr Ravichandar, an alumnus of the college himself. Does the candidate have a smile, what is his body language, these are the little things that interviewers take note of. Most industries, he emphasised, look for candidates who conform to standard behaviour. “Organisations need conformists, well packaged and delivered,” he said. Giving out little tips to the students who would soon be in the job market, Mr Ravichandar said that candidates need to keep themselves well groomed. Most lose out because of their appearance even before the interview begins. He urged the students to take up jobs with a good company even though it paid less so that they get good “branding.” Also present at the talk were Swami Atmaghanananda, Secretary of the college, and Dr Kanaga Sabesan Nagarajan, Professor-in-charge of the college.
