‘Open Source’ meet to be held in Madurai

Madurai, Feb. 4In an effort to develop Madurai as a hub for open source solutions among the emerging tier II destinations in information technology in the State, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Zone, is organising a one-day conference cum exhibition, ‘Open Source Madurai 2008’, on February 29.The objective is to create awareness and impart application knowledge among enterprises and the academia on the benefits of embracing open source-based software products and services in preference to proprietary software systems. Besides being cost effective, the open source system provides freedom of choice in vendor-locking and would enable development of Indian products, according to Mr V. Krishnamurthy, Chairman of CII (Madurai).

There will be a paper presentation competition on open sourcing for IT and management students. The top three papers will be given cash awards and the top two will further be presented at the conference, said Mr R. Sivarajah, Convenor (ICT Panel), CII (Madurai). The event is being jointly organised by the Electronics Corporation of Tamilnadu (ELCOT). Key speakers at the conference include Mr C. Umashankar of ELCOT, Mr Shankar Iyer of Red Hat, Dr Nagarjuna of Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education, Mr Krishnakant of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mr Navin A. Sylvester of Winways Systems, and Mr Shuveb Hussain of Binary Karma.
