Deloitte Consulting to grow India presence

Augmenting manpower to tap business potential

Ambar Singh Roy

Kolkata, Feb. 4 Deloitte Consulting has hitherto focused largely on its offshore business. Now, it is turning its attention to the growing Indian market as well. The member firms of global consultancy major Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu have zeroed in on three service areas for growth: Strategy & Operations, Human Capital and Technology.

The organisation (all Deloitte entities taken together) expects its headcount in India to go up from around 8,000 at present to 12,000 by 2010 and, thereafter, to 20,000 “beyond 2010”, according to Mr Roopen Roy, Managing Director of Deloitte & Touche Consulting India.

Mr Roy told Business Line, of the 8,000 professionals currently employed by Deloitte entities, 5,000 were focused on the company’s offshore business. “With the Indian economy growing at the rate at which it is, it is appropriate that we leverage our huge presence globally to take a larger share of the Indian market for consulting, financial advisory and tax services,” he said. Deloitte generated a revenue of $8.9 billion from its global consultancy business last year, he added.

Overall, Deloitte member firms, spread across 140 countries worldwide, generated a revenue of $23.1 billion in 2007. This was an increase of 15.5 per cent over 2006.

According to Mr Roy, Deloitte entities in India would need to augment manpower strength in keeping with the expected increase in the scale of its operations.

Mr Roy said Deloitte Consulting had recently won projects from ICICI Prudential, General Insurance Corporation of India, SAIL, Coal India, Government of West Bengal, Power Finance Corporation, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, NTPC, NHAI, Hindujas and UB Group, among others.
