Quitting cashew sector jobs

This refers to the report “Women workers leave cashew industry broken” (Business Line, February 5).

The report states that “at least 10 per cent of the workforce in the cashew industry is under pressure from their IT professional children to leave their jobs”.

One feels the women are taking a wrong decision if they quit their jobs in the cashew factories, as all is not fine with the IT industry today, going by recent reports.

Appreciation of the rupee (against the dollar) is making the IT sector contemplate cuts in the salary hikes for its employees.

The reasons, of course, are not far to seek. More than 70 per cent of the Indian companies have clients in the US.

Also, mothers and sisters of IT professionals, who have been contributing their bit to the cashew output in the economy, are themselves valuable resources, with their own special skills and must not at any cost remain ‘jobless’ just because they have children who earn well.
