Kerala budget on March 7

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 5 The Kerala budget for 2008-09 will be presented in the State Assembly on March 7.
The budget session of the Assembly will begin on February 20 with the policy address by the Governor, Mr R. L. Bhatia. The budget presentation by the Finance Minister, Dr Thomas Isaac, will be followed by tabling of a vote-on-account, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
The Cabinet decided to form a sub-committee, headed by the Finance Minister, to look into the issue of mounting water and power charges arrears by the public sector undertakings.
The committee will also comprise the Electricity Minister, Mr A.K. Balan, the Water Resources Minister, Mr N. K. Premachandran, and the Minister for Local Administration, Mr Paloli Mohamed Kutty.
The Cabinet also decided to increase the honorarium and allowances of people’s representatives in the local bodies with effect from October 2007.
Accordingly, the presidents and vice-presidents will get an increase of Rs 500 and Rs 400 respectively, while the standing committee chairmen and members will get Rs 300 more. The attendance allowances have also been raised by Rs 15 and Rs 10 per sitting.
