Interiors & Homes States - West Bengal Interior designing market set to register 60% growth Manish Basu Kolkata, Feb. 5 The interior designing market in India is all set to register a 60 per cent growth rate this year. With the real estate sector expected to grow by 40-45 per cent, the interior designing market is catching up fast. The sector registered a growth of almost 45 per cent last year, but this year the growth will be much more, said Mr Bichitresh Saha, President of The Association of Architects, Builders, Interior Decorators & Allied Business, at Kolkata on Tuesday. With the middle-class segment now ready to spend on decorating their homes, this market is going to witness a phenomenal scale-up. “Even a 500 sq ft flat can be fully decorated along with all the basic amenities like lighting, curtains etc, at a minimum cost of Rs 2.5 lakh,” he said. “Kolkata is going to see almost 1.5 lakh sq ft of residential space added to its map this year. If you multiply that with the cost of interior designing per sq ft – Rs 750 on an average - there is a potential market size of Rs 11.25crore here.” Apart from new houses, the practice of furnishing of old houses has also picked up in recent times, he said. The association is organising the annual exhibition of interior designs and decors, ‘Interiors 2008’ at Netaji Indoor Stadium from February 7-12. “This year, the exhibition will have 104 stalls and 82 companies from all parts of the country participating in it. We expect a footfall of close to 2 lakh this year.” It will be also an opportunity for18 local designers to showcase their work nationally, Mr Saha said.
