Accident averted at Kandla Port

Ahmedabad, Feb 6

A major accident was averted today when a methanol tank caught fire at a warehousing facility near Kandla Port in Gujarat, reports reaching here said. The incident occurred at the tank farm situated in open spaces outside the port premises. The tank was owned by a private company dealing in chemicals. No injury or death were reported, police said. The roof of the tank was blown away in a powerful blast around 10 AM when fire began to spread to other tanks. However, timely action by fire tenders brought the blaze under control in a couple of hours. About 500 tonnes of methanol was reported to have been destroyed in the incident. Preliminary estimates suggested a loss of nearly 20 lakh worth of chemicals, mainly methanol. The cause of the blast was being probed, the reports said.—
