Society & Development States - Andhra Pradesh AMD sets up computer learning lab for girl students Our Bureau Hyderabad, Feb. 6 Semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and American India Foundation (AIF) on Wednesday commissioned a Computer Learning Lab at the Government Girls High School in Secunderabad and plan to host more such centres in the country. This learning lab, set up in league with its partners including Microsoft Corporation, is part of AMD’s vision 50x15 that aims to connect 50 per cent of world’s population to the Internet by 2015. This lab, equipped with AMD Athlon-powered Dual-Core processors and Microsoft PCs that run on Vista, seeks to provide affordable Internet access to more than 450 school children at the Government Girls School. The Senior Vice-President and General Manager of Global Consumer Electronics Group and President, AMD Canada, Mr Adrian Hartog, who was at the school to interact with the children, said AMD is working with many partners across the world to make 50x15 vision come through. This is an important part of AMD’s global plan. “We are supportive of the One Lap Top Per child Project (OLTP) that seeks to empower children and bridge the digital divide. Such initiatives create tremendous value in the digital information revolution,” he explained. This lab was set up in the government school by AMD and would be maintained and managed by the company. Mr Hartog said that similar projects are under way in many parts of the world. There is no definitive number attached to this. It all depends on various partners and other local initiatives. “The digital inclusion eco-systems around the world will eventually enable sustainable economic development. The company had launched similar effort in Bangalore in November 2007,” he said. More Stories on : Society & Development | Hardware | Andhra Pradesh
