SIMA wants swift action on power front

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Feb. 6 The Southern India Mills Association, Coimbatore has expressed fear that unless the State Government takes immediate decision on dealing with the power situation, the textile industry would become sick during the coming summer months.

In a statement issued here, Dr K.V. Srinivasan, Chairman, SIMA, deplored the TNEB’s “improper management of power shortage” and said the industry that has been facing a plethora of problems including “abnormal appreciation” of the Indian currency against the dollar, high input costs, high interest rates and sluggish demand, is the worst hit in Tamil Nadu due to power shortage.

Unplanned disruptions

The unplanned power interruptions prevailing for the past five months have worsened the situation. The industry has been requesting the TNEB for nearly a year to announce power cut or planned shut downs and supply uninterrupted power to minimise losses.

The Government promised to consider the industry’s plea for exempting furnace oil and HSD oil from VAT, waiving e-tax for captive power generation and encouraging running of captive power plants etc. He said it was learnt that TNEB and the Industries Department have sent their recommendations to the Government to ease the situation and minimise the losses suffered by the industry due to power shortage.
