Rupee weakens marginally

Mumbai, Feb. 7

The rupee weakened marginally against the greenback on Thursday, tracking the weakness in domestic stock markets. The home currency opened at 39.50/52 and fell to an intra-day low of 39.55/56 as the Sensex took a deep plunge and ended the day at 39.52/53, moderately down from the previous close of 39.51/52. “Exporters and foreign banks started selling dollars when the rupee touched 39.55/56, which again pushed the rupee up to close at 39.52/53,” said a dealer a t a private bank. Foreign exchange dealers expect the rupee to trade in the range of 39.45-39.55 this week. In forwards, the six-month premia closed at 1.28 per cent (1.35 per cent) and the 12-month at 1.31 per cent (1.34 per cent).
