Hyderabad, Feb. 8

In its moves to tap business in contract logistics, the Seaways Shipping Group along with its joint venture partner Rhenus Logistics of Germany has signed a long-term contract with Continental Engines, India.

The focus of the business would be to provide contract logistics services in Europe, said Capt P.V.K. Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director of the Rs 460-crore Hyderabad-based Seaways Shipping Group. Under the agreement, which would be in place for four years, Seaways Group and Rhenus will provide comprehensive contract logistics services, he told Business Line here.

Services

The range of services would include, receiving export cargo at plant, arranging equipment, local transportation, export handling, warehousing, inventory etc.

For the Seaways and Rhenus JV, this is the first major contract involving warehousing and distribution of cargo in Europe, since the formation in 2005.

For the present contract, the company has formed a separate group to handle the automotive logistics in New Delhi. The team will handle exclusively, the shipments of about 300 TEUs expected during the first year of operation, Capt Mohan said.

Contract logistics

In the larger push in contract logistics, Seaways Group would focus on point-to-point delivery of cargo, especially from India to Europe, the Americas, Africa and Far East countries, he said.

The entire gamut of ocean freight movement, inland transportation, clearances and delivery mechanisms are being put in place. The existing tie-ups with international partners would be strengthened to grow the business, he said.

Currently, Seaways Shipping has collaboration with its JV partner Rhenus in Europe, VMS in China, Bibby Line Group of UK and a large US company to meet the growing market opportunities in the sector, Capt Mohan said.
