Inflation crosses 4%

New Delhi, Feb. 8 Inflation has begun to rear its head once again, with the WPI-based inflation rate crossing the 4-per cent mark to surge to a six-month high of 4.11 per cent for the latest reported week of January 26.

Food items, including salt, cereals, spices and bakery products, were among the main contributors for the surge in the inflation rate, which was recorded at 3.93 per cent during the preceding week.

The previous high at 4.4 per cent was recorded for the week ended July 28, 2007.

Manufactured goods, which account for 64 per cent of the WPI, surged 0.3 per cent during the latest week. Among the items of common consumption, prices of salt increased by 5 per cent during the week.

In addition, maize, moong, wheat, bajra and bakery products too turned dearer.
