Supply chain industry short of skills

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Feb. 9 The biggest hurdle to talent management in the supply chain industry is the lack of proper training, according to professionals. They were speaking at a session on supply chain management (SCM) talent in India at the Sourcing Summit 2008 in Bangalore on Friday.

Dr Roger Moser, Director, Supply Management Institute International, termed employability in the Indian industry as ‘low’ because people in the profession have theoretical knowledge, but have not dirtied their hands, often resulting in low skill levels.

Dr Balasubramaniam, former head, Infosys Leadership Institute, said that SCM professionals have to recognise that new industry types have emerged and that they have to develop skills needed to service these industries.

“For instance, the traditional industries are ‘make to stock’ where a risk that is carried fully by the organisation is important, ‘make to order’ where capacity utilisation management and ‘assemble to order’ where integration issues are important.

Therefore, the operational part of an SCM job is diminishing while strategising is increasing, according to Mr Harsha Kestur, President (South), Indian Institute of Materials Management. SCM professionals now have to move from being value enablers to value enhancers, Dr Balasubramaniam said.

Mr Himal Tewari, Consultant, Russell Reynolds Associates, said that from a search perspective, SCM should hire the ‘missing generation’ — professionals from sectors that didn’t grow for some time, but are doing well now. “It’s also important to develop leadership rather than look at readymade proven talent,” he said.
