Mahindras to set up engineering colleges

Alka Kshirsagar

Pune, Feb. 9 The Mahindra Group will invest Rs 250 crore over the next three years to set up five engineering colleges across the country. The primary and secondary schools it currently runs will also, in time, be branded as Mahindra World Schools.

Speaking to Business Line on the group’s latest initiative, Mr Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman of the Group and Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra, said that they were in the process of setting up five multi-disciplinary Mahindra Engineering Colleges. The first three, located in Chandigarh, Kanhe (Maharashtra) and Goa will become operational by academic year 2009, while the process of identifying two more locations was under way, he said.

“All five will be networked to enable teaching through video conferencing. Strong liberal arts will also be part of the core curriculum,” he said.

He added, “The Chandigarh administration had given us the land to put this up in education city. In Maharashtra, M&M will donate land at Kanhe where we have a stamping unit, while in Goa we had acquired land for a training institute.” All the educational institutes will be handled by a trust that is being set up for the purpose.

The group, which also runs ten-odd schools at locations where there is a Mahindra facility, is also launching the Mahindra World School at Chennai.

“The group will give resources to run this school,” Mr Mahindra said, adding that there were plans to develop the name as a common brand name for its schools. All projects undertaken in the education sector will not be for profit but as part of corporate social responsibility initiative, he said.
