Tea Quality teas turn dearer at N. Indian auctions Our Bureau Kolkata, Feb. 10 Last week, the CTC leaf and dust markets in the North Indian auction centres of Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri saw selected better sorts selling at firm to dearer rates, while the remainder continued to ease in value following the decline in quality, according to J. Thomas & Company Private Ltd, the tea auctioneers. The major blender operated strongly with good support from other packeteers. Domestic segments also operated in strength. Orthodox teas were irregularly easier following quality with the major blender offering good support on smaller sorts while exporters and internal sections were selective. The small weight of Darjeeling whole leaf grades on offer were steady, while the remainder tended irregular. The local dealers were the mainstay of the market with selective support from a packeteer. The arrivals at the auctions have sharply dropped following the closure of the cropping season in north India. Global trendsThe Colombo market saw good demand at generally firm to dearer rates except for the low growns and dusts, which were irregularly lower. The Mombasa market was fully firm to dearer for the better sorts while the remainder were irregularly lower. Strong export demand was seen. More Stories on : Tea
