High grown winter teas fetch premium at Coonoor sale

Coonoor, Feb. 11 High-grown winter Nilgiri teas fetched premium prices at Sale No: 6 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here on Saturday when upcountry buyers mostly from the western region bid high to enhance the quality of their trading stock.

Some exporters said that they were out-priced by Indian buyers.

“The keeping quality of winter teas is high. We expect their supplies till first week of March,” an auctioneer told Business Line.

Curzon Tea, sold by Carritt Moran and Co, fetched Rs 144 a kg – the highest for any orthodox tea sold here in 2008. Tea Services India bought it for Mumbai market.

Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 99, followed by Homedale Estate Rs 91, Kannavarai Rs 83, Green View Rs 82, Selva Ganapathy Supreme and Sree Tea Supreme Rs 81, Hittakkal, Deepika Supreme and Professor Rs 80.

Exports

On the export front, Egypt was buying CTC dusts for up to Rs 53 a kg. Pakistan picked up well made smaller black teas for Rs 49. Russia continued to be hesitant to buy volumes.

For the select black bolder grades, it paid up to Rs 47. There was also some buying for Poland.

Among corporate buyers, Hindustan Unilever Ltd supported good medium varieties.

Generally, medium grades shed Rs 2 a kg, but plainer sorts managed to find buyers at Rs 2-3 more.

Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 44 to 46 a kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 63 to 80 for the brighter liquoring teas. They ranged Rs 47 to 49 for the plain dust grades and Rs 63 to 80 for the brighter liquoring teas.
