Rlys loadings rise 10% in Jan to 72.38 mt

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb. 12 The Indian Railways registered a 10 per cent growth in freight loadings in January over the 6.48 per cent growth in the same month last year.

Apart from iron ore traffic, the increase could have been driven by cement as the Railways permitted higher loadings of cement (of two tonnes per wagon for certain types of wagons) since January in several notified routes.

The Railways is yet to compile the exact commodity-wise loading figures for January, which would reveal the impact of each commodity group in the incremental loading.

The revenue earning freight traffic was 72.38 million tonnes (mt), up 10.1 per cent over 65.74 mt carried during the same month last year, informed an official release.

The Indian Railways carried 643.73 mt (593.67 mt) revenue-earning freight traffic during the first 10 months (April – January) of 2007-08, reflecting an increase of 8.43 per cent, the release said.
