Railways States - Tamil Nadu Plea for broad gauge line between Villupuram & Madurai Our Correspondent Madurai, Feb. 12 The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has made a plea for the announcement of doubling of the broad gauge (BG) line between Villupuram and Madurai in the ensuing railway budget. The single line, at present, is heavily congested and over utilised, barring the introduction of more trains in the route though the Madurai-Chennai sector contributed maximum revenue. There is an urgent necessity and valid justification for doubling the line, reasoned Mr S. Rethinavelu, Chamber President, in a pre-budget memorandum submitted to the Railway Ministry, along with Mr P. Mohan, Member of Parliament from Madurai. The memorandum, among others, has pleaded for introduction of a broad gauge line between Chennai and Tuticorin via Madurai and Aruppukottai to facilitate smooth flow of increased freight traffic between the two port cities, a new BG line between Madurai and Kottayam, and so on.
