Paddy processing research centre gets national institute status

Centre allots nearly Rs 50 cr for additional buildings

Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC) here has been upgraded into a national institute and rechristened as the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT).

The upgradation follows the announcement made by the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, in the budget speech of 2006-2007.

The upgradation has given the institute expanded mandate, objectives and deliverables, said the Director (in-charge) of the institute, Mr K. Singaravadivel.

Consequent to the upgradation, the Union Government has allotted nearly Rs 50 crore for construction of additional buildings, procurement of equipment and creation of 28 new posts of scientists on regular basis and other allied activities.

The new building will have provision for primary processing, storage handling and purchase division, product development, design and human resource development. Technology dissemination centre, food analysis lab will also form part of the new construction. The lab will help researchers for testing and analysing food products.

The buildings will come up on eight acres of land. An auditorium will also be constructed, Mr Singaravadivel said.
