Jute procurement from AP suspended

Our Bureau

Vizianagaram, Feb. 12

The Jute Corporation of India has suspended purchase of jute for the past couple of days and the officials here are unable to confirm when it will be resumed, putting jute farmers in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts to great distress. Usually, the jute procurement goes on till the end of February.

Inferior quality

Unofficial sources say that the JCI is not keen on purchasing any more “inferior quality” jute from Andhra Pradesh, locally known as mesta.

Jute is grown in the two districts but many of the local jute mills get the raw material from West Bengal, as the local crop is found to be inferior.

The State Government, on its part, is not helping the farmers in growing better quality jute.

Therefore, the farmers are dependent on the JCI.

Till now, it is learnt, 51,265 quintals of jute worth Rs 4.52 crore has been procured by the JCI.

The prices offered by the JCI are better than the market prices, but the corporation is able to procure only 15 per cent of the total produce of more than 5 lakh quintals in the two districts.
