Steel prices

This refers to “Price hike: Govt to meet steel producers again” (Business Line, February 13). The Steel Ministry should instruct the price monitoring committee to involve the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in investigating the cause for the price hike. The fact that steel producers are passing on increase in input prices to consumers suggests that there is not enough competition in the steel market. On the other hand, steel producers may be right.

But this is conjectures and requires investigation by an expert body such as the CCI, which has the mandate to look into such issues. This will set an example for co-operation opportunities between the CCI and other government agencies that have overlapping responsibilities and facilitate harmonious relations among the various regulatory agencies.
