Move to improve road connectivity with Bhutan

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb. 14 In a move that would improve road connectivity between the four SAARC countries of Bhutan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh, the Government would move UNESCAP with a proposal to include certain stretches of Indian highways in the Asian highway route.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod allowing the Government to propose amendments to the routes of AH-2 and AH-48 defined in the list of Asian highway (AH) routes to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations (UNESCAP).

The proposal is to extend the AH-48 from Thimphu-Phuentsholing (Bhutan) to Jaigaon, Border Point in India. It would also propose connecting AH-48 to AH-2 in India. With this, the Asian Highway route would connect Bhutan to India, as well as Bangladesh and Nepal. The proposal, to be submitted to working group on the AH, would seek inclusion of “Phulbari” between Banglabandha and Siliguri and defining the route of AH-2 as “… Banglabandha-Phulbari-Siliguri-Kakarbhitta…,” said an official release.

It would also propose providing link to Bhutan by extending route or AH-48 from “Thimphu-Phuentsholing-Jaigaon-Hasimara-Jalpaigui-Phulbari” in place of Phuentsholing–Border of India, as indicated now, and consequently connect with AH-2 at Phulbari in India.
