Non-conventional Energy Info-Tech - Hardware India holds potential for solar energy play M. Somasekhar Hyderabad, Feb. 16 India has not just sunshine round the year, but it could offer the ingredients to manufacture devices that store and distribute higher conversion efficiency power, said Mr Stanley T. Myers, President and Chief Executive Officer, Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). SEMI, the standards making body for the entire semiconductor industry, is also making efforts to put in place standards for the solar photovoltaic industry (SPV), he told Business Line here. With oil set to become scarcer in the long run and also cartelised now, and coal being a polluting source, solar energy is a clean, renewable source that can meet the global energy requirements over the long run, said Mr Myers, who is in India and would be honoured at the upcoming Indian Semiconductor Association meeting in Bangalore early next week. At present, the conversion efficiencies of PV cells and the costs of making them are not very economical. However, the industry needs the support from the Government to accelerate technology developments and make it more cost effective, Mr Myers said. The CEO of SEMI, the Executive Vice-President, Mr Paul L.M. Davis, and senior advisor – India, Mr D.J. Rao, visited a few of the upcoming solar PV industry. Mr Paul Davis felt that the growth in the semiconductor technology and unexpected breakthroughs could give the necessary push to the PV industry, especially in countries such as India.
