IMO’s tough air pollution rules

The new air pollution rules ratified by International Maritime Organisation’s sub-committee on bulk liquids and gases are going to be tough, according to Shipping Gazette. The suggestions of the sub-committee will be submitted to the Marine Environment Protection Committee for consideration at its March 31 meeting. MEPC is expected to approve the rules before formal adoption on October 10 for making them permanent 16 months later, i.e., March 2010. Till then, the rules will come into force under the “tacit acceptance procedure.” The committee has not only set new emission control norms but has also developed a three-tier structure for new marine engines. The need for setting new standards for pre-2000 marine engines has also been highlighted, it is reported.
