– K.K. Mustafah

Workers return home at dusk near Thrissur, Kerala. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) is offering daily-wage jobs in the backward districts of Palakkad, Wayanad, Idukki and Kasaragod. Between April 2006 and December 2007, 16.12 lakh mandays were created in Palakkad and 18 lakh mandays in Wayanad. Equal wages for men and women, elimination of middleman and minimal use of machinery are the highlights of the programme.
