An old film projector gathers rust in a scrap collection centre near Chalakudi in Thrissur district. It is priced at Rs 300 a kg. Cinema halls in small towns of Kerala are fast disappearing. They are either shut down or converted into shopping malls. Spread of cable television, easy availability of pirated CDs and fall in the number of good films are cited as reasons for the sorry state of affairs.
