Coonoor tea prices drop on weak demand

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Feb. 18

Prices slid by Rs 2 a kg on average at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA), as the demand was inadequate to absorb at high bids the 13-week high volume of 9.52 lakh kg.

“High-grown Nilgiri winter teas continued to fetch good prices. Brighter liquoring sorts gained Rs 2 a kg. But, better medium CTC leaf grades lost a rupee. Better medium CTC dusts lost up to Rs 2. Plainer sorts eased a rupee. Orthodox dusts lost up to Rs 5,” an auctioneer said.

Pak, Poland buy

On the export front, Pakistan-selected blacker and smaller descriptions paying up to Rs 49 a kg. Poland picked up some teas for Rs 45. CIS bought medium bolder grades for up to Rs 47. Egypt bought medium CTC dusts paying up to Rs 52.

Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Unilever Ltd was active.
