Post-harvest tech vital to cut wastage of food products: Sahai

Our Bureau

Thanjavur, Feb. 19 The Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Mr Subodh Kant Sahai, has underlined the importance of developing post-harvest technologies to reduce wastage of food products.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Rs 50-crore building for the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, hitherto known as Paddy Processing Research Centre, here, the Minister said there is huge wastage of perishable food items to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore per annum in the country due to lack of proper food processing.

The Union Government has allotted Rs 30,000 crore for agriculture. Though production of agricultural commodities has increased, wastage is also on the rise due to lack of post-harvest technologies. So technologies should be developed to minimise wastage. The Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology will provide post-harvest technology to farmers. It will be raised to international status by establishing tie-ups with world institutes.

Mr Sahai said that the food processing sector is emerging as the main driver of economic growth. The Government has taken up major initiatives for the growth of the sector.
