Study forecasts increase in vegetable prices

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Feb 19 The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s domestic and export market intelligence cell has forecast higher vegetable prices during summer and it has asked the vegetable growers to plan the timing of their sowing to enhance profitability.

The team, headed by its project coordinator, Dr N. Raveendran, in its market and price data analysis, has projected tomato prices to rule higher during April-June as the yield during summer would come down to 60-70 per cent. It advised the farmers to select heat tolerant varieties.

The team also said summer is expected to see more demand for seed onion and the arrivals from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu too will dwindle leading to surge in prices. The same will be the case with cabbage, cauliflower and beet root whose prices tend to go up between May-July. The analysis has pointed to the link in market price for vegetables in Tamil Nadu with that of Karnataka as both states cater to the Kerala’s vegetable requirements.
