Arecanut prices rule steady

Kottayam, Feb. 20

The arecanut market is maintaining more or less a steady price though the arrival of the new variety is meagre. The new arecanut is now priced at 70-75 a kg. The cropping season is from January to March, but the production is still very low according to Campco sources. The new arecanut now received at the collection centres would be ‘kottadaka choll’ after about 7-8 months. The price of the choll now is Rs 75-80 a kg. In Kerala arecanut the yield is very low co mpared with Karnataka mainly due to the shrinking of cultivated area in the State and the high wages of labour force. In Karnataka, the labour is available in plenty with wages ranging from Rs 50 to 55 a day while in Kerala it is Rs 200 to 300. In Shimoga the wages of a labourer was Rs 35 a year ago. The price now ruling in the market is reported to be moderate. —
