Climate & Weather Snow, showers return to hills and plains Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 20 The warming trend in northwest India may set the backdrop for an incoming western disturbance to toss in an induced cyclonic circulation oversee a passing wet session in the region over the next few days. Rain and snow has been forecast for a few places over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh from Thursday while isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over Uttarakhand, Punjab, north Haryana and even north Rajasthan. India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that cold wave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Haryana. Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in large parts of north, northwest, west central and east India but appreciably to markedly above normal in coastal Orissa and in some parts of west Rajasthan. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts sees a trough of low pressure developing over west Rajasthan and pushing a belt of light rains to the southeast to parts of Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh. The US National Centre for Environmental Prediction too supports the outlook for stray showers accumulating during the week ending February 27. SUCCESSOR SYSTEMAnother weak western disturbance is forecast to venture into India braving the presence of a strong ridge (high pressure zone) straddling the international border. Its entry could trigger the formation of another low pressure region in northwest India before the month is out, and resultant unstable weather. Meanwhile, the ridge extending from southern Arabia to Pakistan and western India has shunted the westerly jet stream of high speed winds far and away from India’s north, which explains the ‘feeble’ strength of piggy-backing western disturbances. From farther beyond the Himalayas, a branch of the jet stream has veered to the southeast, setting off a trough in northeast India and the resultant wet session in the region.
