Shipping Cargo: Vizag port surpasses record Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, Feb. 22 With 39 days still to go in the financial year, the Visakhapatnam port surpassed the previous best of 563.85 lakh tonnes (lt) of cargo achieved during 2006-07, according to a press release issued by the port authorities on Friday. The port handled 564.12 lt up to 6 a.m. on Friday, compared to 496.31 lt achieved during the corresponding period last year. The incremental traffic of 6.8 million tonnes (mt) handled during the current fiscal is the highest ever in the history of the port, surpassing the previous best incremental traffic of 5.65 mt achieved during 2005-06. The target for the current financial year has been set at 64.24 mt for the port and the authorities are confident that it could be reached. However, Kandla port is close on the heels of the Visakhapatnam port and several other ports crossed the 50-mt mark last year itself. Besides, the Gangavaram port in the private sector is getting ready by April and in all probability that port might take away bulk cargo (iron ore) to the extent of 8-10 mt. Definitely, therefore, the Visakhapatnam port would have to strive much harder to retain the number one port slot it has been occupying for the past eight years in the next financial year. For the current year, however, the port seems secure enough as the numero uno port in the country in terms of tonnage. More Stories on : Shipping
