Water States - Karnataka Mangalore civic body to seek full funding for dam Our Bureau Mangalore, Feb. 22 The newly elected body of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is planning to take a delegation to the Governor urging him not to reduce the amount earmarked for the construction of a new vented dam at Tumbe in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. Mangalore city depends on water from the reservoir across river Nethravathi at Tumbe. The Mangalore Mayor, Mr Ganesh Hosabettu, who assumed office on Thursday, visited the reservoir at Tumbe on Friday. Speaking after performing a ‘ganga puja’ at the reservoir site, he said the previous Government in the State had sanctioned Rs 40 crore for the construction of a new vented dam at Tumbe, as the existing one is leaking. Mr Hosabettu said that the present dispensation under President’s rule is planning to reduce the amount by half. “A delegation of members from Mangalore City Corporation, including leaders from all the political parties, will be taken to the Governor. The Governor will be urged not to reduce the amount earmarked for the construction of the new dam,” he said. Mr Yogish Bhat, former MLA of Mangalore, said that repair of the existing dam at Tumbe should be carried out on a war-footing. Short tenders should be called immediately for the repair of the dam. Water leakage at the existing dam may affect the water supply schedule to the city, he added. More Stories on : Water | Karnataka
