Hyderabad, Feb. 22

Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President, and Mr M. Natarajan, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, have asked the private sector to wake up to huge opportunity and move on to the next level of design development.

During inauguration of the two-day international conference on avionics here on Friday, Mr Kalam said the private sector needs to play a vital role and enter into design and research and development.

The conference was organised by the Research Centre Imarat, a key missile lab, under the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Mr Natarajan said it was important to propel people to specialise in particular areas. “We should be able to encourage technocrats to go into niche products,” he said.

In his speech, Mr Kalam related the evolution of avionics in the Indian space and defence sectors over a period of time. Giving a list of points for discussion at the conference, he highlighted certain challenges such as landing in poor weather for both air and space transportation systems.

With regard to electronic warfare, he said avionics systems should be capable of handling physical, electronic, cyber and electromagnetic radiation.
