Kolkata airport staff's strike

Kolkata, Feb.22

Non-executive employees at the Kolkata airport will go on strike from February 26 in support of the Airports Authority Employee Union's (AAEU) decision to call a nationwide indefinite-period strike from that day. The union is protesting against the "failure" of the Government to fulfill its 19-point charter of demands. "No action has been taken after our token hunger strike on February 12. So we have decided to go on a countrywide indefinite strike. All our 1, 900 members will remain off the job from February 26. We plan to put normal airport operations at a standstill until our demands are met," the AAEU Secretary, Mr Dipankar Ghosh said. However, the union will not stop passengers from entering the airport, he clarified.

The union has been protesting against privatisation and subsequent closure of the old airports at Hyderabad and Bangalore , and also against the delay in implementation of new pension and promotion schemes for staff and the non-holding of tripartite committee meetings in this regard. The Regional Executive Director of the Airports Authority of India, Mr P.K. Singhal, said all steps would be taken to ensure normal operations at the airport. -Our Bureau
