IIPH offers public health diploma

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Feb. 25 The Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Hyderabad, will begin its post-graduate diploma programme in biostatistics, data management and training activities in July this year.

The one-year programme would offer students practical training in biostatistics, epidemiology and data management in the areas of medical and clinical research and public health, Mr G.V. Krishna Reddy, Chairman of the newly formed 15-member governing council of IIPH, told newspersons here on Saturday.

The diploma programme is open to any post-graduate with quantitative aptitude and mid-career professionals who are already in service.

“IIPH is a non-profit organisation. While the fee would be Rs 1.25 lakh, there will be many scholarships for meritorious students,” Dr K. Srinath Reddy, President of Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and member of IIPH said.

Efforts were also on to start a two-year master’s programme, he added.

PHFI, launched by the Central Government in 2006, is promoting a network of institutes of excellence for public health education which would be brought under a University of Public Health soon.

Eight institutes

“There will be eight institutes of public health across the country. While Andhra Pradesh is first to have IIPH, Gandhinagar, Delhi and Shillong will have similar institutes soon,” he said.

With the support of the State Government and Rs 30 crore donation from industrialists, IIPH would operate from its own campus coming up on a 43-acre plot in Rajendranagar, he added.
