Depot to publish works of budding authors

To raise the number of stores to 150 by July

R. Savitha

Pune, Feb. 26 Leo Tolstoy, Charlotte Bronte, Virginia Wolf, Edgar Allen Poe and Stephan Crane are a few of the famous authors who had difficulty getting published in their early days. So they self published.

Over 98 per cent of all unsolicited manuscripts submitted to publishers are ignored or rejected. Large book publishing companies have huge overhead costs that they must sell at least 10,000 copies of a book to break even. This is a major block to many of the aspiring author.

The Future Group’s Depot has forayed into publication. It has already received 23 books to be published, Ms. Preeti Vyas, Business Head, Depot, told Business Line. She said the they were planning to print 100 books by February 2009.

The authors can take the manuscript to any of the 100 Depot stores across the country and decide on how the finished product should look , the number of copies and to whom it should be given.

A book of around 300 pages, a novel format, would cost about Rs 14,000 for 25 copies, she noted. Ms. Preeti also noted that the published book would be on their stand alone shop shelves for three months. Ms Preeti said it was planning to increase the number of stores by 150 by June.
