Rail Budget

With elections round the corner, it is not surprising that the Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, has presented a Budget that has been welcomed by almost all sections of society.

But he deserves accolades for making the largest public sector organisation, which had been incurring losses for years, profitable.

But for this huge turnaround ( in the last couple of years), reducing freight charges (for petrol and diesel) and passenger fares (cutting down sleeper charges), giving free season tickets to girl students till graduation, increasing the number of trains, upgrading technology, etc, would simply not have been feasible.

In fact, this customer-welfare Budget (Mr Lalu Prasad has used the word ‘customer’ in his Budget speech) must send a message to other sectors (aviation, bus transport, etc) in the transport industry to step up their economic proficiency to benefit the people, as welfare cannot be created in a vacuum.

The Rail Budget is definitely an election budget — good for the common people. But there are certain important aspects which have been ignored. Some strict provisions for checking unauthorised passengers in trains is the need of hour.

The cleanliness drive was introduced last year, but things have not improved much.

All the routes traversing India must have double tracks (line) so that the speed of trains is increased and running time reduced.

The real cause for most rail accidents is human error; it has nothing to do with the speed of the train. The Railway Budget can be called a success only if Mr Lalu Prasad makes sure that his words are followed up by appropriate action.
