Sandvik opens research centre in Pune

Our Bureau

Pune, Feb. 27 Sandvik’s Research and Development Modelling Centre under the Sandvik Materials Technology division was inaugurated on Wednesday at Dapodi in Pune.

This is Sandvik’s first research and development centre outside Sweden. The area of focus, to begin with, would be computer modelling, both on alloy design from thermodynamic models, and metallurgical processing such as rolling and extrusion using FEM(Finite Element Method) or FEA (Finite Element Analysis).

Modelling allows reduction of development time for alloys and metallurgical products such as tubes, sheets and wires by a process of simulation and optimisation using hi-tech computational systems.

Plans for global hub

The need for experimentation is reduced and introduction of new products are speeded up, Mr Hakan Kingstedt, Managing Director & President, Sandvik Asia Ltd, said. He said this would be a significant step as, “The Sandvik Group will be looking at establishing India as a global hub for knowledge sourcing.”

Dr Olle Wijk, Executive Vice-President SMT and Head of R&D added, “We want to establish the R&D activity in India because the Asian region is big and rapidly growing for Sandvik Materials Technology. The R&D centre gives us an opportunity for close co-operation with customers in the Asian market.”

Sandvik Group has been investing nearly 4 per cent of its earnings annually in research and development over the years. Mr Peter Gossas, President, Sandvik Materials Technology, noted that India ranked high in research capabilities both from competence and cost point of view. The new centre in Pune would showcase the local representation of modelling experts in Asia, where the market is up surging with rapid pace, he added.
