New Delhi, Feb. 28 Maruti Suzuki India Ltd announced that its cumulative exports crossed 5 lakh units. The company said that 1,180 cars were shipped on Thursday from the Mumbai port to various Latin American countries.

Maruti Suzuki, which sells its cars in all five continents, stated that Europe accounted for 56 per cent of its cumulative exports. It was followed by the Netherlands at 67,700 units, Italy at over 41,000 and the UK with over 34,000 stood as the largest buyers within the European countries. Germany and Hungary imported over 20,000 cars.

Popular cars

“Amongst the non-European markets, Algeria is the biggest buyer with over 42,000 units, followed by Chile, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Like in the domestic market, Maruti 800 with 178,000 units has been the most popular car from the company’s stable overseas. Alto follows closely with 152,000 units. Zen, which was exported to Europe since 1994, sold over 130,000 units cumulatively,” said a company statement.

With its growing thrust on exports and increasing role in Suzuki’s global operations, Maruti Suzuki is targeting to export one lakh units annually of its compact car A-Star.
