Economic Survey ‘Boost private participation in Rlys, urban transportation’ Our Bureau New Delhi, Feb 28 Indicating the need to have higher level of private participation in the dedicated freight corridor project of Railways and urban transportation, the Finance Ministry has suggested setting up of public sector rail track company to own new tracks and signals, while allowing free entry of private and public-private partnership rail freight companies. The Ministry has suggested this as one of the “policy reform options” in the economic survey tabled in Parliament today. This option broadly suggests the model followed in the UK railway system as well as in some other EU countries. Public transport systems in metros and large cities must be run by organised private companies that can use modern logistics and back office systems for planning routes and timings, acquiring and analysing data on usage densities and running an integrated people movement system, it said. A comprehensive system of road parking fees must be devised and introduced in metros and large congested cities, said the survey. More Stories on : Economic Survey | Railways | Urban Development
