Budget Budget may boost irrigation demand Government committed to spending Rs 20,000 crore under the AIBP. Gargi Shah Mumbai, Feb 29 The budget allocation for the agricultural sector may create a one-time demand for irrigation systems but policy initiatives hold the promise of creating a sustained demand for such systems going forward, said Mr. Anil Jain, Managing Director of Jain Irrigation. He was talking to Business Line on the impact of budget proposals on agriculture. He is not only buoyed by the allocation of Rs 500 crore for micro- irrigation that creates a direct demand for irrigation systems but is also happy at the Government commitment to spending Rs 20,000 crore (inclusive of a grant component of Rs 5,500 crore) under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP). Once water is made available only then can a farmer spend on irrigation. The benefit programme will allow additional land to come under water potential area thereby creating demand for irrigation systems in those areas, said Mr Jain. Referring to the goal of food security, Mr Jain said drip and sprinkler irrigation systems were imperative for attaining higher productivity so essential for realising self-sufficiency.
