ISRO’s manned space mission gets Rs 125-cr allocation

Our Bureau

Bangalore, March 1 Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) human space mission proposal has got its first significant budgetary share, Rs 125 crore, while the Department of Space has got 24 per cent raise in outlay for its 2008-09 activities.

The space budget of Rs 4,074 crore, compared with Rs 3,290 crore last fiscal, partially provides for at least three major projects – the GSLV-Mk3; the human mission plan that is yet to be approved; and the eight-satellite Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System that has received Rs 175 crore over last year.

The medium-lift satellite launcher GSLV-Mk3 gets a big spread of Rs 275 crore. The ongoing project will double the current lifting capability of the indigenous rocket to four tonnes. Mk3, ISRO’s next big product, is expected to be ready for trial in 2009-10.

Mk3 will also be the vehicle that will carry the ‘Indonaut’ into space, if the project is cleared. A space capsule that will carry and bring back a human also gets an outlay of Rs 10 crore under an ongoing SRE or Space capsule Recovery Experiment.

“The manned mission plan has way to go and will come about around 2014 if approved,” said Mr S. Satish, Director of Publicity & PR, ISRO.

“Last year, it got a token share of Rs 5 crore. This money will help us to initiate pre-project activities. We have completed just the first round of discussions and a long cycle of approvals lies ahead of the project,” he told Business Line.
