APMC licence: Traders seek Govt intervention

Our Bureau

Mangalore, March 2 The traders from Bunder area in Old Mangalore have sought the intervention of the State to direct the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Mangalore to renew their licence for trading in the area.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, Honorary Secretary of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and President of Kirana Merchants’ Association, said that traders will have to submit their applications to APMC for renewal of their licences by the end of February every year.

Following this, APMC will renew their licences by the end of March.

No licence for Bunder

However, the APMC in Mangalore has announced that it will not renew the licences of traders in Bunder. The committee is asking them to shift their activities at Baikampady in Mangalore.

The traders from Bunder had expressed their opposition for this move at a meeting convened by APMC on February 26, 2008.

In spite of this, the APMC has taken a decision not to renew the licences of traders from Bunder area. Mr Prabhu said that this has caused concern among the traders.
