Kerala to host ‘Responsible Tourism’ meet in Kochi

Our Bureau

Kochi, March 2

The Incredible India Second International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations will be held here at Hotel Le Meridien from March 21 to 24. The conference will be jointly organised by Kerala Tourism, International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT)-UK and ICRT-India with India Tourism as partner.

The meet is aimed at throwing more light on responsible tourism practices across the world and charting the way ahead. Senior officials in the State Tourism Department said that the conference would be a key global initiative to help the tourism industry and all its stakeholders to wake up to the problems and issues at hand – economic, environmental, socio-cultural and above all socio-economic.

Agenda

For the participants, the meet will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about what has been achieved worldwide on responsible tourism and how to move the agenda forward. For the travel and tourism trade, case studies will be a pointer to improving their social, economic and environmental practices.

According to officials, the choice of Kerala as the venue is a tribute to the State’s responsible tourism initiatives. One of the few destinations in the world to take up the issues of sustainability even during its early stages of development, Kerala has successfully implemented Responsible Tourism practices with the active participation of the tourism stakeholders as well as the local community.

The State is today home to several working models of responsible tourism practices that contribute to enriching nature, the environment and the community.

The large number of home-grown tourism entrepreneurs further ensures that a major portion of the tourism revenue is retained in the State.

Destination-level Responsible Tourism Committees have been set up at Kovalam, Kumarakom, Thekkady and Wayanad to initiate and monitor the Responsible Tourism activities, the officials added.
