Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 2 The Confederation of Indian Industry’s opinion poll on Sunday revealed that 94 per cent of the CEOs endorsed the Union Budget 2008-09 as people-oriented.

With regard to boosting the overall competitiveness, 50 per cent of them were of the view that there were measures being taken that would benefit the industry too. An 87 per cent of the CEOs said that that the Budget proposals would not increase the overall tax burden on the industry and economy.

Another 76 per cent of the CEOs felt that the Budget announcements were focussed on inclusive and sustainable growth. While 72.5 per cent of them rated the Budget as growth- oriented, only 42 per cent approved of the announcements as reform-oriented.

More possibilities

The CII CEO opinion poll said that despite the attempt made in the Budget to stimulate demand and provide more purchasing power in the hands of the people, possibilities of further reforms in the area of financial sector, agriculture and infrastructure could have been made.

The Budget announcement was seen as helping the economy move from a labour-arbitrage to knowledge-arbitrage economy by 80 per cent of the CEOs in the poll. The CII poll revealed that the expectation of 21 per cent of the respondents were not met by the Budget.
