Industry & Economy - Budget
Big relief for salaried class

Kudos to our Finance Minister for his epoch-making Budget-2008 which would wipe the tears of millions of poor farmers of our country, thanks to waiver of Rs 60,000-cr worth loans. It is very heartening to note education, healthcare, agriculture, social development and child and women’s welfare, skill development have been accorded significant allocation. Excise duty cuts in pharma, automobiles and few mass consumption items would lead to bigger consumption and lead t o industrial growth. Increase in personal income-tax exemption is a big relief for middle-class salaried people as it would lead to an increase in disposable income and savings. Higher cap on Sec 80 D waiver towards payment of parent’s medical cover augurs well for the welfare of our elderly citizens. Five per cent increase of short-term capital gain tax will induce investors to opt for long term investment and prevent them from speculative trading. A knowledgeable, healthy and robust India is in the making in the near future.

S. Ramalingam, Chennai.
