China invited for talks on allowing Jet flights to US

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, March 3

With the stalemate on whether Jet Airways will be allowed to operate flights from China to the US continuing, the Union Government has invited the Chinese authorities for talks any time till March 21 to sort out the matter.

In January this year, during the visit of Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to China, Jet Airways was permitted to operate flights on the India-China-US route. The airline was looking at operating a daily flight on the route.

However, since then, while the Chinese authorities have allowed Jet to operate flights from India to China, they have not yet given permission to operate onwards to the US. The Chinese authorities claim that the air services bilateral agreement signed between India and China does not allow an airline from India to operate onwards to the US, a point disputed by the Indian side.

“The invitation has been extended so that the two sides can sit face-to-face and sort out the issues rather than exchanging letters on the matter,” a senior Government told Business Line.

The airline has also been advised to consider operating the flight through a point other than Shanghai and is said to be considering the option of connecting India with Hong Kong and continuing the flight onwards to San Francisco.

At the moment, Air India is the only airline from India that operates four times a week on the India-China route.
