Now, Intel to power nettops, netbooks

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 4 Chip-maker Intel on Tuesday said that the next billion Internet users could potentially come from what the company referred to as ‘netbooks’ and ‘nettops,’ a new breed of mobile Internet devices.

While the mobile computing device is called netbook, its Internet-based desktop is nettop.

Powered by a new Intel system on chip platform, these devices, with different form factor, are likely to be priced at $250-$300, and have similar capabilities that some of the computers have and, significantly consume less power.

Addressing newspersons over a conference call on Tuesday, the Intel Asia Pacific General Manager, Mr Navin Shenoy, and Mr Uday Marty, Marketing Director, Basic Mobile Platforms, Mobility Platforms Group, said they expect millions of such devices to roll out by 2010-2011.

They were in talks with Original Design Manufacturers in Taiwan and other markets, for such devices.

Low power consumption

Explaining the fundamental difference between these devices and the current day Classmate PC, they explained that the latter is now powered by high capability processor, consuming more power.

These new devices will be extremely power efficient and enable people to access Internet and run on Linux and Windows operating systems, depending on what an individual opts for.

To be marketed under the Atom brand, these new generation Intel processors are aimed at people focused on Internet usage to communicate, listen to music, watch, play, share and learn. These bring flexible Intel architecture to MIDs or mobile Internet devices.

Already, notebooks have outpaced sale of desktop PCs, because of the flexibility they bring to a user and it would not be long before these new devices make inroads. There is a huge market for affordable and desirable mobile devices.
